Sea Sick?

The nautical look has been floating around since about mid-2005. Mostly worn by celebrities, it didn't pick up much steam on the runways until 2006. But this summer is awash with the style. From stripes, to anchors, to the prominent red, white, and blue (with a little yellow here and there), designers have jumped aboard, keeping in line with the resort wear themes for spring/summer (are you catching these metaphors??).

Some people have complained that they are sick of nautical, but the style never really goes away. It's a very classic look that tends to pop up here and there every spring. Although, I do agree that it has become a bit mainstream, which is usually the kiss of death. But I actually haven't seen too much of it in the stores lately. I've decided not to walk around looking like a sailor all summer so I'm going for the nod to nautical look, rather than the full sailor dress. I found this great bag for only $34.99:

My advice on the nautical is to keep it to the accessories or a few inexpensive tees/tanks. But of course, if you have the dough then suits like the one from Jean Charles de Castelbajac (pictured above) are a great fashion statement. The key is to find really well tailored, sophisticated pieces. Chanel, Loewe, Tommy Hilfiger, and Michael Kors all have great offerings. I personally love the anchor blazers. But remember, if you're going to make the big statement, then make sure it doesn't look cheap or childish.

The beauty of nautical is that it can dress up a very casual look. For instance, take some notes from Vanessa Minnillo, who looks great in this 3/4 striped jersey, and black rope bag, which ties together her sea style. (I suggest that you invest in one of these purses, so classic - note that invest means spend money; the cheap versions are hideous and won't last).

Details are another route that you can take. For instance, button design (as in Tommy Hilfiger below; don't you love those shoes!) or nautical-inspired jackets. The stripes are not flattering on everyone, and may result in overkill, but simply wearing some combination of red, white, navy, or yellow is a subtle way to rock this look. White wide-legged pants (sailor style optional) are a good way to incorporate something that you can wear at a later date without a nautical feel, and of course, ropes and anchors either in print/embroidery, jewellery, or on a purse can add a decidedly nautical twist to a simple outift.

Here's a look at some nautical accessories from the runways. What's the deal with these new ankle bracelet purses? What practical use can they have? Are they really a nod to celebrities (house arrest in style)? If so, I think it's genius! I'm totally kidding. Sort of.
